Two sailors in critical condition after coronavirus infection
Crew members of the container ship Athens Bridge have tested positive for coronavirus. Two seafarers in critical condition required immediate hospitalisation. The vessel was allowed to anchor off the port of Manila on May 5.
The two seafarers requiring medical attention were transported to a hospital in Manila under all sanitary conditions. The remaining 10 crew members infected with coronavirus were isolated from the healthy seafarers on board.
The Athens Bridge in April this year visited, among others, a port in India, where another wave of the coronavirus pandemic is underway. By 4 May, more than 20 million people had been infected there and more than 222,000 had died. A new variant of the coronavirus, B1617, is responsible for this tragic rise in infections.
Samples taken from seafarers will be analysed.
