TotalEnergies and KGHM signed partnership agreement on wind projects

TotalEnergies and KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. have signed a partnership agreement to participate on a 50/50 basis in the Polish government’s tender for the development of offshore wind projects in the Baltic Sea, the copper company said in an announcement on Tuesday.

The government has launched a new bidding system covering 11 areas in the Polish part of the Baltic Sea, representing an expected total capacity of more than 10 GW, to take advantage of the large potential of the Baltic Sea for wind power generation due to favourable weather conditions.

– The partnership will be built on the strengths of both companies. TotalEnergies will leverage its proven expertise in offshore operations, experience in managing large-scale projects and links to global supply chains. KGHM, as a state-owned company and a global leader in the mining industry, will bring its knowledge of the Polish market – the release indicated.

It was added that in the case of obtaining one or several wind farms, the partners will mobilise their best resources in order to realise these projects according to the highest standards and deadlines. The cooperation is thus expected to stimulate local industry, create jobs in Poland and contribute to the provision of green electricity at a competitive price.

– The development of offshore wind energy contributes both to Europe’s energy transition and to security of supply. Thanks to favourable weather conditions, Poland is particularly well positioned to participate in the development of this promising market – said Vincent Stoquart, senior vice president for renewables at TotalEnergies, quoted in the release.

He stressed that the company is pleased to cooperate with KGHM on Polish tenders for offshore wind energy construction.

– Together, we will mobilise all our expertise to meet the challenges of these projects and thus contribute to Poland’s renewable energy goals – he added.

– In KGHM’s strategy we have declared the achievement of climate neutrality by 2050. We are already past the planning stage and are engaged in concrete activities. We are involved in the process of acquiring several onshore and offshore projects. We have also submitted preliminary applications for the next round of permits in the Baltic Sea. Cooperation with the French partner with respect to the offshore wind farm project seems to be very promising – emphasised the President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. Marcin Chludziński.

As reported, TotalEnergies is already developing a portfolio of offshore wind power projects with a total capacity of over 10 GW, of which 2/3 are bottom-mounted power plants, and 1/3 – floating power plants. These projects are located in the UK (Seagreen project, Outer Dowsing, Erebus, ScotWind), South Korea (Bada project), Taiwan (Yunlin project), France (Eolmed project) and the US (New York Bight project). The company has also been shortlisted for competitive tenders in the US, UK and France, and will participate in a tender in Norway.

TotalEnergies is a global multi-energy company that produces and sells energy on a global scale: oil and biofuels, natural gas and green gases, renewables and electricity. The company operates in over 130 countries.

The KGHM Polska Miedź Group is the world’s leading producer of copper and refined silver. The State Treasury holds 31.79% of the shares.
