The fifth minehunter is launched

At Remontowa Shipbuilding in Gdansk, on 19 March 2025, a christening ceremony and launching of the fifth Kormoran II series mine countermeasure vessel was held.

“The ships that are already in service have proven their combat value. Therefore, I do not doubt that sailors are waiting impatiently for the moment when the flag will be raised on ORP Rybitwa. I am glad that ‘Cormorants’ are being built in a Polish shipyard. Poland’s industry shows its potential in this way,”-  the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak Kamysz noted in a letter to the participants.

We’re proud that, as Remontowa Shipbuilding, we actively participate in the process of building the high capabilities of our Navy, and the delivery of nine ships in recent years, including three minehunters and six tugboat-type auxiliary vessels, confirms that our efforts to ensure that the ships built in our shipyard are characterised by high technical sophistication and are delivered within contractual deadlines are yielding visible results – emphasised Dariusz Jaguszewski, CEO of Remontowa Shipbuilding.

The “Rybitwa” vessels enhance the Navy’s capabilities and have a direct impact on the country’s wider resilience. We are not only increasing the number of our naval forces but also implementing modern technologies corresponding to contemporary threats at sea – said Rear Admiral Jarosław Ziemiański, Inspector of the Polish Navy.

Maria Teryfter became the ship’s godmother and, according to the military protocol, named the vessel Rybitwa (Tern) after symbolically breaking a bottle of champagne against the hull.

During the ceremony, representatives of Remontowa Shipbuilding, Polska Grupa Zbrojeniowa, PGZ Stocznia Wojenna and Centrum Techniki Morskiej signed a letter of intent to cooperate in jointly offering Cormorant II-type vessels to foreign customers. This agreement creates an institutional framework for conducting joint export projects to the markets of the European Union, NATO and allied countries.
