Record-breaking popularity of shipbuilding postgraduate studies

On Friday, February 28 postgraduate classes were inaugurated at the Shipbuilding Institute of the Gdańsk University of Technology: Shipbuilding. This is the second edition of these studies.
The initiative to create these studies came from the Association of Polish Maritime Industries FORUM OKRĘTOWE, which took patronage over them. It results from the real need of employers struggling with the growing problem of shortage of highly qualified staff.
These studies have enjoyed great interest since the first edition. The organizers initially assumed max. 25 places. Ultimately, 34 students started classes in the first edition of the studies: 12 in the field of “ship propulsion” and 22 in the field of “ship structure and technology”.
The second edition of the studies was even more popular. Last Friday, 44 students started their classes: 12 in the field of “ship propulsion”, 19 in the field of “ship structure and technology” and 13 in the first open field of study “CAD/CAM/CAE/PLM in shipbuilding”. Women constitute 36% of students.
Of the 44 postgraduate students, 36 are engineers, including 21 with a master’s degree, while 8 people have non-engineering education.
The students starting their studies were welcomed and wished good luck by: the head of postgraduate studies “Shipbuilding”, PhD DSc Eng. Damian Bocheński, director of the FORUM OKRĘTOWE Irek Karaśkiewicz, and vice-dean for development of Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Ship Technology PhD DSc Eng. Jacek Kropiwnicki.
================================
Anyone who has completed any tertiary education (engineering or non-engineering) can become a student of the “Shipbuilding” postgraduate studies.
The organizers’ intention was to create studies conducted in an innovative, inspiring, interesting and flexible way. Some subjects will be taught in English. In addition to scientists from the Gdańsk University of Technology, outstanding engineers and managers from the shipbuilding industry were invited to give lectures. In addition to the specific knowledge they provide during the lecture, they share their extensive professional experience.
These studies are designed to be practically accessible to everyone: for people who have no naval knowledge, as well as for those who has not or have been working in the shipbuilding industry for many years but want to learn or refresh their knowledge in subjects that do not concern their direct everyday activities. There has been significant technological progress and changes in many areas, so for some people who studied many years ago, it is worth considering refreshing their knowledge in a systematic way. There is an open, friendly atmosphere during classes, encouraging questions and discussions.
When preparing the program, the organizers stood firmly on the ground. The study program is a joint work of the university and industry, therefore its scope is very practical – it contains only those subjects that provide knowledge needed in everyday professional practice.
Constant substantive supervision over the studies is carried out by a mixed team composed of Shipbuilding Institute employees and industry representatives associated with the FORUM OKRĘTOWE, monitoring the course of classes and – in cooperation with students – constantly improving the studies to meet the actual needs of the students.
