Poland’s grain exports by sea have fallen

This year’s staple cereal yields will be lower than last year’s, the Grain and Feed Chamber said on Monday. As it added, wheat with consumption parameters will most likely be less than expected this year.

In most regions of the country, the grain harvest has already finished or is coming to an end. The exceptions are the provinces in the north of the country, where the harvest is still underway. In most provinces, this year’s yields of staple cereals, i.e. wheat, rye, barley, oats and triticale, will be lower than last year’s, forecasts the Grain and Feed House.

“Wheat generally has a good density and falling number (parameters determining storage stability and suitability for milling and baking – PAP), but in many regions of the country lower than expected protein is recorded. There are many indications that the share of wheat with typical consumer grain parameters in the total harvest of this cereal will be lower than expected,” – reported the Chamber

As indicated, despite the still ongoing harvest, there is little turnover of grain on the market, as many farmers have decided to store grain in anticipation of higher prices. What is being sold is mainly grain that has previously been contracted with processors and trading companies.

“More willing to sell grain are trading companies than farmers,” – the release added.

According to the Grain and Feed Chamber, Poland’s grain exports by sea in July this year amounted to 238,000 tonnes against 494,000 tonnes exported in June this year and 748,000 tonnes exported in July last year. Small exports are also expected in August this year. The Chamber explained that grain prices on the internal market offered by processors are often higher than those offered by exporters.
