PGNiG: another intensive quarter of LNG supplies

Polskie Górnictwo Naftowe i Gazownictwo is maintaining a high pace of liquefied natural gas deliveries to Poland. Between July and September, the Company took delivery of 14 LNG cargoes at the President Lech Kaczyński LNG Terminal in Świnoujście. An additional three deliveries were brought in by the PGNiG Group via the terminal in Klaipeda, Lithuania.

“The President Lech Kaczyński LNG Terminal in Świnoujście, which has been in operation for several years, and the Baltic Pipe pipeline, which was launched a few days ago, are the pillars of national energy security that enable PGNiG to effectively diversify its natural gas imports. By intensifying the off-take of liquefied natural gas cargoes and making effective use of the continuously developed transmission infrastructure, we can ensure stable supplies to our customers in the coming heating season, as well as in the years to come,” – stressed Iwona Waksmundzka-Olejniczak, President of the Management Board of PGNiG SA.

PGNiG is currently using two LNG terminals in the region – the Lech Kaczyński LNG terminal in
in Świnoujście and the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) Independence in Lithuania’s Klaipeda.

The last delivery in the third quarter of this year, made at the end of September, came from Qatar. A cargo of 120 million cubic metres of gas (after regasification) arrived in Swinoujscie on the basis of a contract with the Qatargas company, the Al Huwaila gas carrier.

Most deliveries in the third quarter of this year, however, came from the United States. Most of the raw material purchased from this direction came from spot market transactions. In total, PGNiG received approximately 1.4 billion cubic metres of natural gas (volume after regasification) at Świnoujście in the third quarter.

Supplies to Świnoujście are supplemented by the import of liquefied natural gas via the terminal in Klaipeda, Lithuania. PGNiG began using the facility there in May 2022, receiving six cargoes to date with a total volume of over 0.5 bcm (after regasification). In Q3, the PGNiG Group imported three shipments through the Lithuanian terminal.

At the end of September, PGNiG obtained an allocation of regasification capacity in Klaipeda for the years 2023-2032. The reservation will enable the Company to receive LNG cargoes with a volume of over 0.5 bcm after regasification per year. The gas imported in this way can be sent to Poland through the Poland-Lithuania gas pipeline, launched in May this year.

The intensification of LNG supplies is an important element in the diversification efforts implemented by PGNiG and in making Poland less dependent on gas supplies from Russia. In total, since the beginning of the year, the PGNiG Group has taken delivery of 46 cargoes with a volume of about 51.9 TWh, which corresponds to about 4.5 bcm of the raw material after regasification, of which 40 deliveries were made to Świnoujście.

This shows the scale of the intensification of deliveries – a year earlier, in the same period, PGNiG took delivery of 26 cargoes with a volume of 32 TWh, which means that in the first nine months of this year, the Company increased the volume of deliveries by more than 60 per cent.

PGNiG intends to maintain the high rate of LNG offtake in the fourth quarter as well. The first October delivery to the Swinoujscie terminal arrived from Qatar. The gas carrier Tembek entered the Swinoujscie LNG terminal on Tuesday 4 October. The gas carrier delivered approximately 120 million cubic metres of natural gas (after regasification). This is the 41st delivery to the terminal this year and the 189th since the gas port began operating.
