ORLEN invests in logistics and production assets in Gdansk

ORLEN Group is investing more than half a billion zlotys at its Gdansk refinery to strengthen the safety and security of product supply. A terminal for the handling of marine vessels will be built on its quay, which will enable the handling of more than one million tonnes of products, including base oils, marine fuels or biodiesel additives, from as early as 2025.
In parallel, a modern Hydrocracked Base Oil (HBO) installation, associated with the terminal, is being built in Gdańsk. The value of this project is over PLN 1.4 billion.
ORLEN Group is investing more than half a billion PLN at its Gdansk refinery to strengthen the safety and security of product supply. A marine terminal will be built on its wharf to enable the handling of more than one million tonnes of products, including base oils, marine fuels or biodiesel additives, from as early as 2025.
Thanks to the HBO facility, which has been developed since 2021, the economics of oil refining will be improved. The introduction of state-of-the-art Group II base oils, which are a completely new product category, to the Polish market and foreign markets will significantly increase the company’s competitiveness. The installation is to produce annually over 400 thousand tonnes of these oils and several tens of thousands of tonnes of fuel intermediates.
– In line with our declarations, we are focusing on the dynamic development of the Gdansk assets, using their value to implement the strategic objectives of the entire ORLEN Group. We are allocating a total of PLN 2 billion for investments that will increase the profitability of the refinery’s crude oil processing, as well as strengthen the security of product supply. By investing in our own infrastructure, we are increasing our independence from external partners and thus generating significant savings in logistics. Importantly, we are also utilising the potential of the local companies that will be working on this project on our behalf,” says Daniel Obajtek, President of the PKN ORLEN Management Board.
The target reloading capacity of the marine terminal may reach up to 2 million tonnes of products per annum in the following years. Implementation of the investment will improve the profitability and security of the supply of bio-components for fuel production (biogasoline and biodiesel) and the transport of products (base oils and marine fuels) produced at the refinery. The terminal will also relieve the burden on the rail siding operating at the site, as this is the route currently used to transport products between the refinery and external transhipment points.
The project includes the construction of a quay to handle seagoing vessels of up to 130 m in length, a draft of up to approximately 5.8 m and a beam of up to 17.6 m. The works include the construction of the quay with two liquid fuels transfer stations for handling tankers (each with 4 loading arms) and the necessary infrastructure, i.e. buildings, pipelines, steel trestle bridges, underground and auxiliary infrastructure connecting the terminal with the refinery in Gdansk.
The project will be carried out by a consortium comprising companies from the Sopot-based NDI Group (consortium leader) and Biproraf sp. z o.o., BPBM “PROJMORS” Sp. z o.o. and Dipl. Ing. SCHERZER GmbH. The general contractor will operate in the EPC formula.
