Map of the historic Gdansk shipyard
The Solidarity Heritage Institute has prepared a unique map dedicated to the historic Gdansk Shipyard and its heritage. This is the first initiative of its kind. Its aim is to bring the inhabitants of Gdańsk, as well as tourists visiting the Tricity, closer to the history of the place where the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union ‘Solidarity’ was born.
A map of the historical Gdańsk Shipyard prepared by the IDS shows all the most important facilities located within the historical establishment. It is accompanied by short descriptions of these places. This makes it possible to find out, among other things, where the strikes began and where the various industrial halls were located and what they were used for, such as the frame shop, the sheet metal workshop, the hull works or the pipe works.
Thanks to the map, visitors to the historical site of the Gdansk Shipyard will learn about the complex shipbuilding process and the work of the large-scale enterprise, as well as where the historic events took place, including the Great Strike of August 1980, which led to the signing of the Gdansk Agreement, one of the August Agreements. These events paved the way for the creation of the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union ‘Solidarity’, which was instrumental in bringing about political change in Poland and the collapse of the communist regime in Central and Eastern Europe.
The map prepared by IDS shows and describes the largest ever number of historic shipyard buildings, both existing and those that have disappeared from the shipyard landscape. In addition, it shows the changes that have taken place in the space of the Gdansk Shipyard over the years. Through this initiative, IDS wishes to save the cradle of Solidarity and its individual buildings from oblivion and to raise awareness of the important role played by this facility in the recent history of Europe, Poland and Gdańsk.
The author of the concept of the map and its content is Andrzej Trzeciak, an expert on the protection of the cultural heritage of the Gdansk Shipyard at IDS. The map will be available during events co-organised by the Solidarity Heritage Institute – such as the BHP Hall celebration or at the IDS stand located next to the institution’s headquarters (information on stand availability will be posted on the IDS website). The number of copies of the map is limited.
The Solidarity Heritage Institute was established by an agreement signed on 31 August 2019. It is a public institution co-managed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage and the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union ‘Solidarity’. The mission of the IDS is to popularise the phenomenon and significance of the Solidarity Trade Union and the Solidarity social movement in Poland and internationally.
