Intermodal transport in Swinoujscie has become a reality

Intermodal transport in Świnoujście has become a reality: On 8 December, we welcomed the first semi-trailer train at the Swinoujscie Ferry Terminal.

Following successful tests in November, Freightliner PL has just started pilot runs from Silesia, via Świnoujście to Swedish ports and on to Gotteborg and Stockholm.

Intermodal is a modern and sustainable form of transport.

– By developing intermodal transport, we are implementing EU policy and reducing CO2 emissions by as much as 76 per cent,’ explains Ryszard Kaczmarek, Director of the Transport Directorate in Świnoujście. – explains Ryszard Kaczmarek, Intermodal Market Development Director at Freightliner PL. – Transport organised in this way is not only a benefit to the environment, but also brings many social and economic advantages. By relieving the burden on road transport, we make transport less burdensome for other road users and residents of cities and smaller towns.

Customers themselves will also benefit: by having their goods locked up in a single intermodal semi-trailer from the beginning to the end of the route, they have full control over them through an integrated trailer monitoring system.

The ongoing pilot is a preparation for the start of regular transport already at the beginning of 2025.

– This is a historic moment,’ emphasises Rafał Zahorski, port development officer. – ‘On 8 December we welcomed the first intermodal train with semi-trailers at the Swinoujscie Ferry Terminal, thus joining the European and global elite developing intermodal,’ he adds. We are doing this in order to unload road traffic from and to the Swinoujscie Ferry Terminal as much as possible.

– Intermodal transport is gaining in importance year on year,’ says Aneta Szreder-Piernicka, Commercial and Marketing Director. – No one in logistics needs to be justified in their efforts to increase the share of rail in freight transport. We have therefore focused our efforts on developing intermodal transport based on the port infrastructure of the ferry terminal in Świnoujście,’ she explains.

The terminal’s annual turnover of 0.5 million lorries provided a sound justification for this project.
