Gróbarczyk: Maritime University of Technology will be the first such university in the country

“This will be the first Maritime University of Technology in our country. There are some in the world, but I think all others will be overshadowed by the Maritime University of Technology in Szczecin.” – Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Marek Gróbarczyk said in Szczecin on Monday.

The minister took part in a press conference devoted to the creation of the new university.

In mid-April this year, President Andrzej Duda signed a law on the establishment of 1 September 2022. Maritime University of Technology in Szczecin. The bill was submitted to the Sejm by a group of MPs from PiS, KO, Lewica and PSL. The university will be established on the basis of the existing Maritime University in Szczecin. The rector, senate, council and college of electors will continue their terms of office within the university.

The establishment of the Technical University on the basis of the Academy is to emphasise the technical profile of the scientific and didactic activities of the University. The fields of study offered by the present Maritime University are predominantly those belonging to the fields of engineering and technical sciences.

– For us, the Maritime University of Technology is a name that fully reflects the character of both research and teaching. We are a pure engineering school, we have engineering faculties, we educate engineers. This is our goal as far as the semantics of the name is concerned,’ said professor Wojciech Ślączka, the rector of the Maritime University in Szczecin, during the conference on Monday.

– We will be recognized by employers and this is the most expressive form of this faculty for us. Surveys and analyses show that employers are looking for engineers at technical universities – he added.

– I’m convinced that this decision will give the university new opportunities, allow it to build an even better brand in order to educate professional staff for the maritime economy, but above all it will give the university a strong wind in its sails – said on Monday a member of the Commission for Maritime Economy and Inland Navigation, MP for PO Arkadiusz Marchewka.

The Maritime University of Szczecin continues the tradition of maritime education, which dates back to 1947. In the academic year 2021/2022 a thousand people started their studies, including 800 on full-time studies of the first degree.
