The Strażak-28 (‘Firefighter-28’), a firefighting vessel built at the Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard for the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority, has begun sea trials. The tests, which will take several days, will be followed by preparations for the handover of the vessel to the Ordering Party.
The vessel has already completed assembly work and harbour trials, i.e. tests of all equipment and systems on board the vessel in harbour conditions. Now it’s time to see how the new vessel will perform at sea.
– During the sea trials, the equipment will be checked under normal operating conditions, and all the assumed parameters of the unit, speed, and pulling power will be verified – says Krzysztof Radzikowski, project manager. – The manoeuvring tests will be carried out, the operation of the fire extinguishing system, which is the primary function of the vessel under construction, the launching of a floating oil barrier and all systems responsible for the safety and safe operation of the vessel in operation.
The Strażak-28 is a modern firefighting vessel, 29.2m long, 10.47m wide, with a bollard pull of 45t, equipped with two FiFi pumps of 2,700 m3/h each. Sea trials began on Tuesday, October 25 and were expected to last five days.
The construction process of the vessel is now virtually complete and the vessel is almost ready to be handed over to the Contracting Authority. After the sea trials, final adjustments and the fitting out of the vessel with spare parts and material inventory will remain to be done, the project manager adds.
The signing of the acceptance protocol, i.e. the official handover of the Strażak-28, is scheduled for 18 November.
The video shows tests of the Strażak-28′s firefighting system:
The ship will perform, among other things, fire protection activities during cargo handling, the transport of hazardous materials by tankers carrying flammable gases and liquids, requiring the assistance of a firefighting vessel and tasks related to rescue and port safety. In addition, the vessel will also perform towing functions and will have ice class L2.
The Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaport Authority currently has two fire vessels in their fleet. The Strażak-26 is based in Świnoujście and primarily assists the methane carriers, that deliver liquefied natural gas to the President Lech Kaczyński LNG terminal. Meanwhile, the ZMPSiŚ has the Strażak-24 at its disposal, which secures the port of Szczecin and also provides assistance to vessels carrying hazardous cargo on the Szczecin-Świnoujście fairway.
The purchase of the new firefighting vessel has EU funding under the Operational Programme Infrastructure and Environment 2014-2020, Priority Axis III Development of the TEN-T road network and multimodal transport, Measure 3.2 Development of maritime transport, inland waterways and multimodal connections, Project ‘Purchase of a firefighting vessel for the Szczecin and Świnoujście Seaports Authority Joint Stock Company.
