Crist has launched another hybrid ferry
The hull launching of another hybrid ferry, project number P317, took place at the Crist SA shipyard on Friday, October 21. Crist is building the fully equipped ferry for Finnish ferry operator Finferries.
The ship is similar to previous ferries named Elektra and Altera. According to the Gdynia-based company, Elektra has been an international success, being named the first hybrid ferry in the European Union and the second in the world. It was also granted the international “Ship of the Year” award at the 2018 Marine Propulsion Awards and the 2018 CEMT Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Success of the European Maritime Industry, presented at the 2nd Forum of Development Vision in Gdynia.
The Altera, launched in the summer of 2022, is a sister version of the Elektra but more modernised and slightly larger.
The P317 unit, named L-317, was transported from the assembly site to the dock and launched using a gantry crane. The ferry will operate on the Nauvo-Korpoo route in Finland. L-317 will be powered using shore-charged batteries, which take only a few minutes to charge.
The vessel is 70 metres long, 12.4 metres wide, with a draft of 2.4 metres, and can carry up to 200 passengers and 52 cars. The ferry is double-ended, which allows faster loading and unloading. She is manned by only one person.
