Construction of the sixth mine destroyer type ‘Kormoran II’ in the series begins

On Tuesday, 15 October, the Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. shipyard in Gdańsk belonging to the REMONTOWA HOLDING S.A. Capital Group will hold a ceremony to commence the cutting of the first plate for the construction of the sixth mine destroyer of the ‘Kormoran II’ type series for the Polish Navy. The vessel will be named ORP Czajka.

This is another event this year related to the construction of modern ‘Kormoran II’ type mine destroyers. In January, the first sheet metal cutting for unit no. 258/5 (the future ORP Rybitwa) took place, while in March the keel was laid. In June, in turn, we witnessed the launching of unit no. 258/4 (the future ORP Jaskółka).

– The construction of the fourth, fifth and sixth mine destroyer of the 258 project ‘Kormoran II’ series is at the present stage being realised in accordance with the schedule for the construction of these units,’ says Robert Stola, director of the “Kormoran II” project at Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A.

– Unit no. 258/4 has already been launched and fitting-out work is being carried out at the shipyard quay with a strong emphasis on laying cables and installing electrical equipment. As for unit no. 258/5, we are currently preparing the bow section for its departure from the hall and painting, which will take place in October, while the stern section will continue to be fitted out and will leave the hall in November,’ Robert Stola adds.

All the mine destroyers under construction will be incorporated into the 12th Wolin minesweeper squadron of the 8th Coastal Defence Flotilla, based in Świnoujście.

The ships are being built by a consortium consisting of: Stocznia Remontowa Shipbuilding S.A. (leader), PGZ Stocznia Wojenna Sp. z o.o. and Ośrodek Badawczo-Rozwojowy Centrum Techniki Morskiej S.A.

Construction of the modern ‘Kormoran II’ type mine destroyers at the Remontowa Shipbuilding shipyard began 10 years ago. On 25 April 2014, a ceremony was held to mark the start of construction of the ‘Kormoran II’ type mine destroyer, which was renamed ORP Kormoran after the flag raising in 2017.

The prototype ship was designed and built under the development work formula. Its operation to date has allowed modifications to be made to the construction and equipment of subsequent serial mine destroyers. Thanks to these modifications, ORP Albatros and ORP Mewa (delivered to the Polish Navy in 2022), as well as the next three contracted vessels, will have optimal capabilities for operating in difficult hydrometeorological conditions. The fundamental and most significant changes concern artillery armament and underwater mine countermeasure systems.
