American missile destroyer in the Port of Gdynia

USS Gravely missile destroyer

The American missile destroyer USS Gravely is docked at the Port of Gdynia.

– The US Navy ship, the missile destroyer USS Gravely, entered the Port of Gdynia yesterday to replenish supplies – reported the spokeswoman of the 3rd Flotilla of the Bolesław Romanowski Shipyard, Cmdr Anna Sech.

The vessel is moored at the French Quay. It will probably leave the Port of Gdynia on Friday.

This is not the first visit of the USS Gravely to Gdynia. In 2019, the American missile destroyer moored at the French Quay and was open to visitors.

The American ship is designed to complement AEGIS Ticonderoga-type cruisers in air and missile defence.

The Military Research and Analysis Group, which publishes military journals, wrote that “USS Gravely is operating in the Baltic as part of US support to European allies in an era of the potential threat from the Russian Federation, working with units of NATO’s SNMG-1 team, among others.”

SNMG-1 is NATO Standing Maritime Group 1 and is one of NATO’s standing maritime immediate response forces. It consists of four to six destroyers and frigates. Its role is to provide NATO with an immediate operational response capability.
